Google vs AI Search: Where Your Next Customer Actually Finds You

Customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Siri for recommendations instead of scrolling links. What that changes for a local business website — and what to do about it.

For twenty years, being found online meant one thing: rank on Google, get the click. That game still matters — but a second one is running next to it. A growing share of customers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Siri a question and act on the single answer they get back, without ever seeing a list of links.

What changed

Google itself now answers many searches with an AI Overview — a written summary at the top of the page that names a few businesses and often ends the search right there. Ask an AI assistant “who installs pavers in Turlock?” and it doesn't show ten blue links; it names one or two companies. If yours isn't one of them, there is no page two to be found on.

How AI systems pick who to recommend

They can only recommend what they can read and trust. When an AI system composes an answer, it pulls from websites that state plainly who the business is, what it does, where it works, and what it costs — and from structured data (schema markup) that says the same thing in machine-readable form. Vague brochure sites give these systems nothing to quote, so they quote someone else.

The good news: it's the same fundamentals

The work that wins AI answers is honest SEO done thoroughly: clear service definitions, real city pages, question-and-answer content, consistent contact details, and schema underneath it all. That's the discipline called AEO/GEO — we've written up how we do it — and it compounds with classic Google rankings instead of competing with them.

One more piece: freshness. AI systems, like Google, favor sites that look alive. That's the job of our automated blog — the engine publishing the article you're reading right now.

What to do this month

Ask an AI assistant what it says about your business today — literally type “who is [your business name]” and “best [your service] in [your town]” into ChatGPT. If you're absent or wrong, your website isn't giving these systems anything to work with. That's fixable, and the fix helps your Google rankings too.
