How Much Should a Small Business Website Cost in 2026?

Agency quotes run from $500 to $10,000 for the same small-business website. Here's what actually drives the price, what you should get at each level, and the questions that expose a bad deal.

Ask three agencies what a small-business website costs and you'll get three numbers that differ by thousands of dollars — for what sounds like the same thing. The spread isn't dishonesty, mostly. It's that “a website” hides three very different purchases: the build, the upkeep, and the ownership.

The build: what you're actually paying for

A real build means someone sits with your business — your services, your cities, your photos, how customers reach you — and writes pages around it. That takes hours, and it's where the money legitimately goes. What should NOT cost extra: mobile-friendly layout, basic search engine setup (titles, descriptions, sitemap), and an SSL certificate. In 2026 those are the floor, not upgrades.

The cheap end of the market skips the sitting-with-you part. A $200 site is a template with your logo dropped in — and Google can tell, because the words on it could belong to any business in any town.

The upkeep: the number nobody quotes upfront

Every website has an ongoing cost: hosting, the SSL certificate, backups, and someone to call when something breaks or changes. Hosting for a small-business site should run in the tens of dollars a month, not hundreds. What matters is that the number is stated before you sign anything — surprise maintenance fees are the most common complaint we hear from owners who came from another provider.

The ownership question — ask it first

The most expensive websites are the ones you don't own. If the agency registers YOUR domain under THEIR account, leaving them later means losing the address your customers know, your signage points to, and your rankings are built on. Before price, ask: “Is the domain registered to me? If I leave, what do I take with me?” A fair answer is: the domain is yours, and you take everything.

What we charge, for comparison

Our one-time build is $599 with the first month of hosting included, then $35/month for hosting — and the site and domain are yours. If you'd rather never think about the website at all, the managed plan is $87/month and includes changes, local SEO and an automated blog. No contracts either way — we publish our cancellation page for a reason.
